Single
Sided Deafness (SSD) is total hearing
loss
in one
ear.
SSD is usually a permanent condition. There are a number of causes of
SSD including sudden
deafness,
measles, mumps, trauma, acoustic neuroma tumours and hereditary
disorders.Every year 200 new case of SSD permillion in the world.
- Sudden deafness
- Physical damage
- Disorder of the circulatory system
- Trauma (head injury)
- Diseases such as measles, mumps, meningitis
- Pressure on the hearing nerve
Signs
of hearing loss in infants vary by age.
Children
should be using single words by 15 months, and simple 2-word
sentences by age 2. If they do not reach these milestones, the cause
may be hearing
loss. A newborn baby with hearing loss may not startle when there
is a loud noise nearby. and Older infants who should respond to
familiar voices may show no reaction when spoken to.
There is no cure for permanent Single Sided Deafness (SSD). However there are treatments available which can restore the sensation of hearing to the deaf side.
